My boss is asking every attorney to set a billable goal for the first quarter and asking what he can do to support us. On a scale of 1-10, I'm an ADHD 11 with a healthy dose of anxiety, so I appreciate the offer, but I also know he's a busy guy - I don't know how to respond. He's having a 1-1 meeting with each of us, and I've historically missed my hours, so I have to be prepared to address this seriously. Any suggestions? (T&E practice)

why have you missed your hours historically? get those details nailed down first because that will come up. additionally, if you’re setting a Q1 goal, make sure you have ACTION steps on how you will achieve this goal given your historical missing of hourly requirements.

he is asking how to support so i would make a list and see what seems most reasonable and feasible. pick three things maybe? an easy, simple thing; a more detailed + complex thing; and something that may be a reach, that he could say no to, but that you want to propose anyway.

take advantage that your MP is asking your opinion and offering concrete support. don’t get that everywhere!

I mean it sounds to me like your firm is trying to address the issue of associates not hitting their targets. I would respond with a plan for exactly what he is asking for lol.

If your ADHD and anxiety are that bad, consider dropping down in hours. Im at 90% because my anxiety gives me insomnia so I need to build in time for nonproductive days after sleepless nights. You can also explore reasonable accommodations under the ADA and applicable state law. Technically i think mine is one. 90% isnt like a common thing at my firm

I have chronic depression which affects my executive functioning, which is also affected by ADHD. I have to break things down into tiny segments. The worse my depression is in a day, the smaller the steps have to be. Try something like that. Hitting hours in a quarter may sound overwhelming, but how many hours do you want to hit in a month? A week? A day? Even a half day? What’s keeping you from hitting hours in the morning? Or afternoon? Is that something you could use help with? For me, I often need to block off time for no interruptions or have times when I don’t answer phone calls so I can work on a project. Or I make a list of what I want to get done that day and see how far I can get (the first item is often “make a list,” just so I can cross it off).

Also, don’t discount therapy and medication. If our organs aren’t functioning correctly, there’s nothing wrong with getting medicine and professional help for them. The brain is an organ, after all.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
