My husband (currently an associate 3rd yr) got offered a little over 100k and the senior title to go private. He is currently making in the mid 70s. Seniors at his office are making in the mid 80s. Would this be worth leaving public?

What does your husband think he should do?

If the best he ever intends to be is a senior, then he should probably consider it, assuming he likes the other company and intends to stay there a while. The upside at a B4 (assuming he's also at PwC) is so large that leaving as a staff to make senior is probably selling himself short. He seems underpaid for a B4 anyway.

like

Not at B4. He is at a mid tier firm.

I left public after making it to senior. Best decision ever. Make the jump! Now I’m an assistant director making 4x what I started off with in public

like

After how many years? My salary increased 3.5x between associate and manager in B4, and that was over 6 years. Base has continued to grow, but total comp is now more reliant on bonus and equity.

Your trajectory isn’t common, frequently leaving for senior after 2 or 3 years in public leads to being a senior 10+ years later.

Is he good?

like

If he wants inferior raises and take a million years to make manager unless jumping ship, then go ahead.

like

Maybe maybe not. Depends his long term goals and expectations. If he waits to make manager he could grow that by at least 50%. It varies.

like

In varies and a lot of it is due to luck in timing as well. if there is a young manager and nowhere for them to go up anytime soon it could be awhile unless they leave. If they are older and aren’t going to getting promoted again it will be until they retire. You basically just have to get lucky with the people above you getting moved up or leaving so that you can fill the position.

like

He will have much more significant jumps if he stays in public. At a minimum stay in public until he is a manager.

like

How can anyone answer this question? We don’t know where you live, what the job market is like where you live, or what firm he works for. What’s his goals, etc.?

The answer drastically changes between OKC and NYC .

like

Sounds like your husbands decision.

like

Yes always great to go private and move away from public

like

I would switch for sure. Im a 2nd year associate and would if that offer came

like

If I were him I would wait until I become a senior to move to private. I find you have better opportunities. If he does not plan to be a manager one day or doesn’t mind his path taking longer to become manager he should leave. I left as a senior from public and I’m still a senior lol. Granted I make 6 figures, my peers are managers and making much more than myself.

like

I would go for it. If it’s not what he wants long term he can always go back to public.

like

For the money? Sure. But he needs to look at it holistically. What is the culture? What is the growth; professionally, industry, etc.

like

If he likes PA then stay and move once he becones manager.
If he doesn't like the PA, then move now. Health is more important, and 100K plus seems good for someone at senior moving from mid tear to industry.

like

I think the long term earning potential is higher in public but he could leave, spend a couple of years in private, and then return to public for more $$

like

I think it’s a good deal!

Leave!

He needs to switch to big 4.

Mid market firm experiment is not as balance as big 4

Absolutely take it. Public will always be there.

Agreed. Can leave for a nice raise, then come back at anytime.

Which one should I take? Please help me decide.

I'm not good at my tech stack. I've somehow managed to perform all my tasks without any escalation/blunders but that also by some help/googling.
I also managed to switch from an Indian mnc to a reputed company and now also somehow cleared a FAANG interview, but i know I'm not much knowledgeable in my tech .

I often fail at some interviews badly.
Not sure till when I'll be able to carry forward by this and the hard wlb at FAANG companies is giving me a fear.
