My husband needs to make a career move. He’s been managing a warehouse in the Raleigh Area for 10 years. At this point, he could run the place blindfolded. He has asked numerous times for a raise, but there has been little to no feedback. Oh! How could I forget! He was given a $100.00 gift card for his 10th work anniversary.

I am reaching out for ideas on a career pivot. He has a degree in horticulture and he’d prefer an officer outdoors. Thanks!

How much is he currently making managing a warehouse? Also, is it a small, medium or large company?

They’re one of the largest lawn and turf distributors in the southeast and this was before they were acquired by the largest wholesaler of landscape supplies approx 8 years ago, but things have been business as usual, minus a few corporate changes. The founder of the company is still CEO.

Construction industry. In or out of office. Construction can’t find enough people to work. There’s over half a million open jobs and growing by month. Heavy highway and heavy civil companies are a great place to look. Federal spending to the tune of $1.3 trillion (infrastructure investment and jobs act) guarantees sustainable growth in this market segment. Apply to 10-15 places a week, and you will get calls back in short order.

Do some research into the money that North Carolina is receiving. Then research the companies who serve the specific project segments. They might even list companies specifically on federal, state, and municipal websites. Apply to those companies. The smaller, more mom-and-pop the place is, the more likely you are to get the job, and enjoy your work. Just be mindful of the industries good-old-boy culture and likelihood of nepotism.

Have him take this test. It is lengthy but is extremely accurate with showing what careers are best for you.

He could look at city jobs. A couple have come out for managing lawn care crews and looking for people with horticulture degrees
