Not gonna lie, it doesn’t sound like a direct conversation with your manager would help. I would compile your PTO request documentation that shows you’ve given more than enough notice and prepared coverage, and take it to your HR rep. Your PTO is part of your compensation and I’m assuming if you haven’t taken pto in over a year, you’re losing days at the end of the year. Get it documented that you’re following company policy to request time off and think about why exactly do you feel threatened that pushing back would risk your job? Is your manager creating a hostile environment, are they only denying your request and not others?
That's really frustrating, I'm so sorry that's happening to you! When this was happening to me, I had to have a very point-blank conversation with my manager and tell her that I needed time off because my work was starting to be affected by the lack of it, and that if she wanted me to be performing to my fullest capability, I needed a break. I made sure to have all my projects covered while I was gone, so that nothing would slip through the cracks while I was out. She wasn't super happy about it, but she thankfully granted me the time off.
It sounds like you're doing all you can. At this point, I think you'll have to chat with your manager and ask when a good time is because they've been denied for a year and you've postponed vacations long enough.
That's got to be against company policy, no? PTO is included in your benefits package, they can't just deny every request as long as there's ample notice given. I'd document everything and be prepared to take it to someone other than your manager when the next request gets denied. They're clearly the problem here.
I ran into this my second year at my company, finally had some decent PTO that I could take yet never was getting approval to take it. Managers weren’t exactly open about why I was getting denied. In my case it was due to a lot of other people being off at that time? Definitely would try to get to the root cause because you should be taking PTO without that much hassle.
