Ask for something between median and high end but be open to negotiating down.
You have 20 years of experience, you're not entry level. Very few people has ALL the experiences listed in job postings. Th3 major thing is you have used some of them in the past and can brush up on others. That doesn't lower your value as a senior person in your field.
If you ask for lower end, they'd doubt your value and qualifications.
If you ask for mid-range, you'll lowball yourself and have regrets.
If you ask for the absolute high end, you might appear cocky as you said given that you're missing some skills.
Between mid and high is the sweet spot in your case.
E.g for a range of 90k to 100k, I'd ask for 97k or 98k.
You're right to question it. There is a big difference in your negotiating power between being early in your career and being near the top of your industry. This market also comes with new challenges, because there are always candidates willing to work for less. Pushing too hard when negotiating can get an offer rescinded.
Any income is better than no income, and you can always job hunt again for a better paying job when you are more confident in your skills.
I can see what you mean. If you do not have all the skills, it makes sense to be in the middle-lower salary range. The pay review, I’m not sure if I’d work in there, to be honest. Go do the work for a year or so and then see.
Shoot for the high-end let them tell you you qualify for middle or low end. You’ll be surprised with what they’re willing to do to get decent talent in the door.
Push for as much money as you can upfront regardless of your skillset. Don’t count on having a salary review or increase as there could be a promo/raise freeze at any point. I learned this the hard way.
