My parents have let me live at home since I graduated in June of 2019. I haven’t had to pay rent and will probably be moving out this fall. I want to get them a nice Christmas gift this year as a thank you. Any ideas for something that parents in their late 50s would enjoy? Something in the $1500 range but price is flexible

Any home projects they have been putting off doing? That would be a really nice repayment. Otherwise, get them a gift certificate for a bed & breakfast / nice hotel and dinner nearby for them to treat themselves

This right here! Did they want to upgrade the countertops in their bathroom? Get a built in grill for the patio?

You moving out is the best gift they could ask for

Think of ways you can improve their lives after you leave. Good security system, Google / Alexa in all rooms, smart appliances (even if they say no now they will eventually start liking them), your firm supported financial advisor, subscriptions to Netflix or other content providers, etc.

A massage equipment/chair! Got one from Home Depot for about $1700. My parents work min. wage jobs and it’s helped them tremendously after being on their feet during long shifts :)

I know my parents really appreciate me giving them experiences than more stuff. I’d try to think of something your parents would enjoy doing with you that’s special to them - take them to a high-end restaurant and night on the town or plan a fun weekend getaway, etc. - 5-10 years from now, a cherished experience will be most valuable

Signed the offer with a competitor, but multiple bosses tried to persuade me to stay with the planned growth opportunities in sight. Still decided to leave, and got "wishing you all the best". Guilty much, I love working with the team, but just want to get better progression and pay.

If I get laid off, I have a previous colleague that started a cybersecurity company. I would love to get involved on the business side of it. Any pointers on skills that are attractive in this realm for a startup? Would be mostly (if not all) federal defense contracting clients. I’m currently in Deloitte’s cyber risk practice but my background and passion is in accounting and finance, and business operations. Graduated in 2017 so still early career.

At KPMG, was going to go up for M last year but it would have been a tad early (only 2.5 years at senior) so I decided to push it back to this year. This year, after talking about my business case since last summer, I was now just told I won’t even be given the opportunity to go up for M at all, with very weak reasoning. I pour a lot of time and effort into my job and this felt like a true sand banging. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it firm being cheap w/ the current economy? TIA.

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
