Congratulations on having a partner who only now realized that people doing your job can keep odd hours. That usually happens at the outset of a relationship. When you're working on something that sucks up a lot of time you just have to deal with it as best you can. You may come to the realization that the job just isn't for you. It happens to a lot of people.
I think it's an important thing to work out early in a relationship. My schedule used to bother my wife and I get it, the long hours suck. But that just means they enjoy spending time with you. Try and figure out how to balance your life and work schedule as much as you can, and figure out ways to stay connected during the chaos.
I suppose it depends on if you were doing this job when you met them, or if you pivoted towards it later on. My husband used to lock the door and turn off the front light when I got home late. Which was extra upsetting because I was already super tired when I got home and really would have preferred support ;) We're actually still together lol but years later he finally understands that was an a-hole move. For you, I guess communication is the best way to handle it. Try to get a sense of why he feels that way, and explain how that affects you too. Some careers simply require odd hours by design. And if you are lucky enough to have a job doing what you love, that should mean something for a partner I would guess. Good luck!
That is rough. It is easy for journalism to consume everything if you let it. Sometimes you have to step back before the story becomes your entire life.
Tell your partner it’s not personal, it’s just breaking news. Then apologise profusely when the story ends and you remember they exist.
