My pay has really stagnated and despite being on 10k more now than I was when I started, I still don’t feel like I’ve actually gotten anywhere financially. Are wages stagnating everywhere or only certain industries?

Wages have stagnated, and the cost of living has gone up. That is something almost everyone is feeling. I make more now than ever, and it felt easier 7-8 years ago than now.

It really sucks, what’s the point in putting in any work for nothing.

The cost of living vs the cost of living increase
It's an illusion to make you think you're gaining more when in reality the prices are going up creating an imbalanced; type of balance that doesn't benefit the people it's supposed to. The math only works one way.

It does, we all know the issue yet are powerless to do anything about it.

When did you start?

4 years ago so not loads of time but I think a decent raise for how long I’ve been working.

I've been working remotely for a while now, and it's been going well. Though I'm not rich, I make enough to live comfortably. If anyone is interested, I'm happy to share what I do and how I got started! Send a comment or a private Dm for more information

That sounds great! I think remote is what I’m after currently, I think it would really help my work life balance and my outgoings.

Prices of indexes go up, but also remember the purchasing power of the dollar has dropped in general about 30% since 2020. So most of us are now making less than we did in COVID.

Oh isn’t that lovely!

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

I'm new to all this. Is it best to save 10% of my salary all in my company's 401k (with 20% match, increasing by 5% every year)... or saving 5% in 401k and 5% in a Roth IRA?

Things have been a bit bumpy (not a me issue) I have a new supervisor and was recently given 7 direct reports (I had zero before). The new position while comes with a significant raise is a move to California. Any thoughts?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
