Culver City is great. There’s lots of smaller neighborhoods right next to the actual limits of culver. I love it— close to freeways, central location (get to the beach, 9 min home from SM if we go have dinner there, 10 min to W Hollywood, 12 min to downtown— this is without traffic obv). And we can get out of town into the mountains in an hour in different directions. Also, I love walking to downtown Culver City. Pretty affordable (comparably) and nice streets with trees and gardens etc just depends on which neighborhood.
All those areas are good options near UCLA. FWIW, depending on what grad program she is in being closer to school might be better. For example, when I went to UCLA Anderson, a lot of the students who weren’t as familiar with LA thought Palms (right near Culver City) was too far to go for social events. A lot of the school social events were in Santa Monica/Westwood. I just ubered and it wasn’t a problem for me, but was annoying people thought a 15 min drive was too far from school.
Lived on the Westside for many years. While the beach is amazing it makes getting anywhere else VERY time consuming and difficult. WLA near the freeway might be a good option to accomplish everything you’re looking for, although not the prettiest option.
In my day at Anderson, critical mass was in Brentwood and Santa Monica for social events and just being around classmates.
