Sounds like it’s a tossup for you so take the C 300 have the 4000 differences back pocket repairs but you’re keeping it a year so that should be no worries. If it’s in milkshake now it’s 4000 on the new car you get later but that could be the difference in some cool options on a used one.
2018 BMW 530i is better choice if had to pick from the two. Both might have problems later, but aleast BMW looks cool right? Haha, just hope it doesn't need a repair, both are super costly for repairs and parts.

I’m curious, why strictly German? Those cars are out of warranty to the price to fix items don’t depreciate. (usually). If you only need a car for a year, why not broaden your search? I say this as a merc owner.
Got it. Stay away from German. Get a Honda accord or a Camry. I’m in the market for a Toyota sienna(brand new). I’m risk averse because a car can look clean in appearance and on paper, but that one gremlin can come up and rob your pockets, especially if out of warranty. An example is that the merc that I’ve have for 18 years still requires that I pay $250 for FRONT rotors, excluding brake pads and potentially calipers. You don’t need to deal with that.
Buy something that will get you by and allow you to save money for what you really want.
I have V6 variants of both, a BMW with 150k and a Merc with 50k, and have been pretty fortunate mechanically with both vehicles.
What I can say is a huge negative is that these "luxury" interiors can get quite noisy as they age as the underlying plastics settle and rub, and certain soft surfaces get gummy or otherwise really worn, and the only fix is to replace the part or panel. These parts can be found on ebay for relatively cheap if you are mechanically inclined, but if you had to have a shop do the work it would be prohibitively expensive to keep up with.
I've actually had both new, just a bit off on the years. I went from the C class to the 5 series. The Mercedes would be my choice - mine was rock solid. My 5 series had a few hiccups. Besides, at 55k, the Mercedes is barely broken in. I got rid of both after 3-4 years, because I was concerned about stuff breaking beyond warranty.
