Never owned an EV before but I've been seeing some crazy deals for leases on a new Rivian R1S quad motor and I'm kinda intrigued about the idea of trying one out for a few years. We'd still have an expedition in our house for longer drives and the Rivian would be for my daily commute (where there's a charging station at my office garage). Curious to get people's thoughts

Loved my Rivian R1T and regularly drove it down to 20% state of charge. I would charge it once every 1.5 weeks at home. It was an amazing vehicle and I would purchase an R1S if the prices come down before the R2 debuts. People talk about no soul and that’s true but they fail to mention minimal maintenance, ultra quiet ride and lots of fun. EV’s are different and after driving one for a while, getting into an ICE vehicle will feel so archaic.

like

Def not bad if you have an ICE too. For sure get a charging point in your home. Don’t rely on office or public charging stations.

Keep in mind that insurance can be a bit higher for EVs bc it’s not repair cost but replacements. Make sure you have adequate coverage

I love my R1T Quad Motor. I leased due to the deals and I’m going to buy it when my lease is up. Fantastic car

If you get free electricity at home/office, it’s a no brainer for a lease for commuter car.

Outside that, you need to do some math, even if the manufacturer is giving you free charging on a public network.

EV’s are designed to be topped up every day to 80-90% (depends by manuf) by way of a slower tier 2 charger (6kw, giving you 10-15 miles of range over an hour). You plug it in at home/office for up to 8 hours, and then when you leave every day you have a “full tank” and don’t ever need to deviate from your route to fuel up. So long as you don’t drive more than 200 miles a day, you’re golden.

Now you can also use the tier 3+ DC fast chargers that will take you from 0-80% in about 30 min. You can also charge all the way to 100% (going from 80-100 will typically take 1.5-2 hrs regardless of power source, it’s a safety measure to prevent overcharging the battery which would lead to the battery pack swelling and causing other permanent damage). Both of those actions aren’t good for the longevity of the battery (but if you lease, that’s not your problem.)

Tier 3s are going to be public chargers (not in your home/office) which means you have to drive out of your way to find one. There could be a line, which may add up to 30 min to your charging time. There’s also the issue that you need to stay with your car OR be able to get to it within 10 min of it finishing charging to avoid an additional fee for blocking a charger.

IMO, the inconvenience of the public chargers only makes sense when you’re doing a road trip. Day to day it’s going to be a PITA if you need to find a public charger to fuel up. When you’re looking at the car’s range, that 100% figure is useless. Figure out what their recommended battery level is (80-90) and then see what that range figure becomes.

EVs have no soul and you should get a comparable a Porsche or M car.

If you’re not into driving & don’t care that your RV will likely depreciate 50% or more in 3 years - get the Rivian.

like

Who cares about the depreciation of a leased vehicle? Not the lessee…

R1S quad $1094 a month - wife loves it. Frunk size is a game changer and bigger trunk space behind third row than most

like

That's really jumping in with both feet. Depending on your commute, you will be fine. We have a Bolt and love it as our commuter and weekend runaround. We have an SUV that barely moves on the weekends.

Ha yeah only reason I'm considering it is the lease payment is on par with that of my wife's 2023 expedition...

My commute is 4mi each way and would be getting one with the large battery pack so figured I'd be fine

like

Ppl keep seeing lease deals but when looking at the site today they don’t seem that great. For a R1S I would be $900 per month with $0 down and 10k miles per year (36 month).

Long time in the making; but we finally sold off from our 50% HWB short. We had two tests at the 3400 level, getting as high as 3420 today before the sell off. Momentum and pessimism over lack of stimulus could take us to the 3107 target quickly, nearly a 10 percent decline over the next month. Stay short my friends. It's going to get bumpy.
