I automatically assume any workplace that describes itself positively as fast-paced usually means chaotic and poorly managed. After reading the book "It Doesn't Have to be crazy at Work," I got a whole different perspective on busy culture and the fact that the office doesn't have to be that way.
You can tell a workplace is disorganized when you spend your entire shift running around, busting your butt, and still feel like nothing is getting done. I’ve been in that situation more than a few times.
Some of this comes down to asking questions, especially if everything you’re being told is “urgent“. If everything is urgent, then nothing is urgent.
There were plenty of days that I went into work and there were fires that had to be put out like within two days only to figure out it was the leader that I was reporting to who kept telling us this needs to be done right now. This needs to be done right now.
When all he had to do was push back and ask what is critical today and what can wait. If you have a leader, who’s pushing back and making sure you and your team are not putting out fires every two days that’s great but if you don’t, and that leader does not push back, ask questions, any of that - it’s time to find a different role or a different company.
If everything is urgent, that usually comes down to a lack of planning.
