Oliver Wyman I’m joining as an experienced hire SC in the next month. Is promotion to Associate a possibility by next promotion cycle or is that off the table no matter how hard I work? Thanks in advance

If you’re trying to game the system. Come in and bust ass for a year. After that you can think about taking it easier. I’ve found early success in a firm can set up great long term trajectory

like

It would be very difficult to do so, unless you joined as an SC close to promotion

YER (year end reviews) closes it cycle in the beginning of October, so there would be ~7 full months for you.

You would have around 6 project reviews (at most*) before the YER, so only by this low number it would be very hard. It also means you'd have to show Associate level skills in most, if not all, categories on our core capabilities**. Unless you joined the firm as an SC2 or SC3 (i.e. people expected you to already be a senior consultant close to promotion), it would be very hard - not impossible, but very close to it.

*Taking shorter and intense projects (like CDDs in our private capital practice) will help, but if that's not what you like I wouldn't recommend going for it.

**Go for our mmc intranet and search for "core consulting capabilities" and you can check all of them

SC to AS is probably the lesser defined promotion imho. That said, since you're coming as an SC3, it's actually very doable to get to AS1 - but you need to do well in the kind of work an associate would be required to do.

If I were you, I'd try to make a great first project, and in the followings I'd talk to the EM/principal to get associate-level demands. It you do well, I don't see why you wouldn't get promoted, except extremely unlikely scenarios (OW goes bankrupt kind of thing)

like

Coming in as SC3, the chances are that on your very first project they won’t be thinking as much about stretching you to ASC as just confirming you can actually perform well across the full set of SC skills. Some experienced hires are only approximately mapped to that level based on some clear strengths, but it’s hard to evaluate the full complement of skills through interviews, and even laterals from other consulting firms sometimes learned a very different way of doing things that might not work or be valued the same here. So that’s the first thing we’ll want to verify, and then bring you up to par on any key gaps.

If you demonstrate well-rounded high-SC skills on the first project, then in a busy staffing environment like today, your odds of getting an ASC-stretch opportunity next go way up. A couple of recommendations follow from this:

1) For the first project, make sure you fully understand the competency model and what is expected of an SC, especially at the top end of the SC range. Be clear with your manager that your objective is to make sure you’re meeting ALL the expectations of the role, so you want to specifically focus on any areas of our competency model that are different from your prior roles, and set up frequent feedback sessions where you not only ask for general feedback, but particular feedback and coaching on any of the areas you’re not sure you’re hitting out of the park. In those conversations, don’t focus prematurely on what it takes to get promoted - start by making sure you’re hearing and addressing fully any gaps you need to close in the current one first.

2) If you get much influence on the choice of your first project, use it (with guidance from staffing) to prioritize:
A) a manager that is known for giving candid and helpful feedback to develop people
B) a project that will end or have a logical transition in team structure within 2-3 months, so that if you succeed in demonstrating SC skills, there is a good chance to transition you into a stretch role

3) If you succeed at shoring up all SC3 skills in the first project, then you start talking more with staffing and your next manager about what it takes to get promoted. Take a similar approach to feedback but with a new set of targets.

4) If you don’t meet all the SC3 expectations in your first project, keep focusing on any significant gaps there. Your odds of promo by year end won’t be that high given the short runway, but you’ll set yourself up better for next year.

I’m in the same boat and curious to know

Possible but extremely extremely improbable…likely gotta wait until next year. I would set expectations to that.

Are you going into the office for NCT or staying virtual?

I’m hitting a point where I am enjoying consulting (advisory) but I’m not sure the idea of narrowing in on a specific industry and exact skillset appeals to me. Seems like MBB is broader and I’m curious (also not assuming I could even get in, but I want to explore the option).
