Once I had an interview with one job after just receiving an offer from another. I told the interview job that I’d rather work there so if they offered me a job I’d take it, I didn’t end up getting that one unfortunately, was it a mistake to tell them I had another offer?

I personally would not offer that I was interviewing elsewhere, as that's not leverage. Only share you have an offer in hand that you are willing to accept.

I have to disagree. As a recruiter and every time they will tell you that they really value having all the information so if they need to expedite processes so as to not lose what might be the right candidate, they can.

No, there's nothing wrong with that. The only possible mistake I see here is saying you would take their job if offered, and that's only in the context of how it would impact potential negotiations (i.e. they knew they were your preferred option and could have used that as leverage). Merely saying you had another offer wouldn't have caused them not to offer you as well. If anything, it would've motivated them to do it sooner if they wanted to hire you.

I thought that too, I think I’d approach it a bit better in the future because you still want that leverage for negotiation, I think I was just desperate to leave my previous job.

Hmmm I don't think it was a mistake. I doubt they didn't offer it because you had another offer. Better to be honest and up front.

Yeah I got told the decision was close anyway, just wondered if that might have played any factor!

If they ask if you’re interviewing at other locations, just say yes. I had one company ask me are you interviewing at other locations or do you have an offer at any locations? I didn’t have an offer, but I was interviewing so I let them know that.

Yeah that always seems good, nice to keep them thinking you might end up going somewhere else.

I get mixed opinions about this. Some say it’s okay to tell them to help them respond sooner. While others say don’t say anything at all.

Always let the recruiter know where you are, so they can expedite if they have to. They will LOVE you for this, and it never, ever hurts to earn brownie points with the recruiter.

No.

Okay lovely!

No. Always, always keep your recruiter contact for any open job engagement updated with where you are. They will LOVE you for this, as they look bad internally for having lost a candidate over a matter that could have been addressed.

When they know that you are interviewing with someone else, and especially if/when you are anticipating an offer, the recruiter can light a fire under the hiring manager and interviews.

It's the Job market my friend. No worries you'll bounce back 😉

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Hi all. I just received an offer for $130k and will be eligible for about 29,000 shares of stock options. The vesting schedule is 1 year and then quarterly thereafter.

Can someone explain what this means? I “will be eligible”. So, I have to buy the shares? Should I be asking at what price?

Newbie here. Please help!

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
