One thing I still struggle with in sales is the emotional hangover after a big deal falls through. I try to reset quickly, but sometimes my confidence dips more than I’d like to admit. I’m working on building a more resilient routine, but it’s definitely a work in progress.

What helps you bounce back after a tough loss? Do you take a break, dig into the why, or move straight to the next deal?

When I would have something fall through like that I'd feel lousy, but I wouldn't let myself feel bad for very long. Obviously, there's the live and learn factor, I'd consider what might have gone wrong, but I wouldn't brood about it. Usually I'd take a walk at the end of the day and duck into a bookstore and distract myself for an hour or so. That's usually all it took to get over it and want to come back the next day ready for more.

Im envious of your ability to reset!

My confidence was extremely easy to shake the first 3 or 4 years of my career. I would over-analyze every loss, and it would cause me to lose focus on the rest of my work. I really had to change my mindset and switch to "that's over. What's next?" and get myself focused on the next sales.

This is a great attitude!

OP, how’s it going?

With my wife for 14 years, 2 kids under 8y - both under a lot of pressure bc Covid/work/private life/… and have been (unconsciously) running away from our couple not working “since a long time” (dixit my wife). We want to try and fix it, but I also met someone new (not sure if she would even want me) and wondering if it’s worth fixing it (since we are trying/running/avoiding it for years) - just worried about the kids…any advice

Hi fellow PMs, Question for the group: has anyone here made the switch from being a creative agency PM to a digital producer or digital agency PM? I.e. going from managing creative projects like TV to managing website builds/UX projects. If so, what was the transition like and what helped you get your bearings in the new environment? I’m thinking about making the switch myself but I don’t have a digital background.

Additional Posts in Jobs in Sales

Hey FishBowl Friends, so I’m currently trying to break into tech sales/FinTech and I feel that due to my previous work history, I might not look like the ideal candidate on paper but I’m an extremely fast learner and very coachable. I’ve been a manger at a gym, got my degree in finance, worked as a client advisor at a top 3 auto dealer in the nation and now I’m a project manager at a solar company. I really want something that’s remote and steady, any recommendations on how to spruce myself up?

How would someone coming from mostly retail wireless sales get into the tech sales industry? I have been a top performer in every sales job that I have had since I started my career almost 10 years ago. I don't have a degree which I feel might be keeping me from getting my foot in the door but I know I would be amazing in this field. I currently work out in the field selling to customers that have no idea I am coming and I consistently perform at the top of my market.

I had a job interview for a role that I really want. The hiring manager scheduled me for an interview and did not show up. Emailed me an hour later stating that he got super busy and couldn’t attend, and would like to reschedule. This is a major red flag, but I can’t help but feel that I am missing out since this role pays 50% over what I currently make. Should I let the recruiter know? What’s your take on this?

Do most tech/SaaS companies make prospective employees sign NDAs? I'm interviewing for the first time in awhile and am entering into a final round with a company who wants me to sign an NDA prior to the interview. I'm hesitant to do so - especially since I am not sure if I even want to work for this company yet. Is this standard procedure?

Hello, I am getting interviews for the tech roles but unable to clear the final rounds. Any suggestions? Mostly, I apply for BDR roles only

“Job hopper” and “quiet quitting” are all schemes made up by boomers to make you think everything is the employees fault. When in reality people are just getting out of bad situations. Older companies do whatever they can to pay you the least amount and get the max work out of you. Except our generation will just leave amid we’re being mistreated, not complain for 35 years making 50k and 0 advancement.

My company blames my generation for not being able to hire everyday. “You guys don’t want to work” coming from some overweight, racist, old coaster. I’ve barely taken any days off this year and pick up “skeleton crew” days any chance I get. I was able to work out a deal with my company before I came because of prior experience luckily, but they offer a terrible base salary and sham of a commission structure to new hires + no remote. Then sit here and can’t figure out why…
