Our tech lead handles every single decision to keep things moving fast. It works for deadlines, but it also stops any real discussion from happening. Should a team be more collaborative, or is having one person in charge actually the best way to avoid a mess?

Well, clarify what you mean by "it works for deadlines". Is the overall product getting out there and meeting expectations? If it is, then clearly that structure works for the lead and the people rolling up to the lead. But if the output is a hot mess, then the answer is probably no.

I've personally found allowing some discussion can result in a more refined design and more motivation on the team to do good work, especially if people are able to walk out of a meeting feeling like they own a piece of the puzzle. We do eventually reach a point where we have to stop debating things and start coding though.

Absolutely should be more collaborative. Bring this up in a retro

There is a term, "design by committy".

This one is going to make some of y’all mad, but it’s so annoyingly unnecessary. The most irritating part is “is it a shirt day or a skirt day”…. Like women don’t wear shirts with skirts and men don’t wear shirts with pants. Shirts and skirts are not mutually exclusive. I’ll just leave this here.

New York folks:
Are you aware of the CPA exam credit extension to 2021 for NY CPA candidates impacted by COVID19? It’s on a person-by-person basis and you need to request the extension. Has anyone tried doing this yet? Can anyone shine more light on this? The extension would really help me, but I’m not sure what more to tell them in my email than the fact that I couldn’t sit for the exams this Spring/Summer due to test centers closing in NYC.

What is salary of Software engineer in Berlin for 4 years of experience

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

Serious question from a happy software engineer, what do you all love about your work/actually enjoy doing during working hours?

I'll start; I'm privileged enough to have been given the opportunity to work and learn deeply on Linux and Kubernetes, and I get to tinker and play with them all day. Problem solving with them is a "fun" part of my job.

Of course most things aren't roses and sunshine, but I'd love to hear the positive parts of what you are doing, or what you like to do at work.

Hello!
I’m a student majoring in Software Engineering. I’m starting my third year in a few months and have an internship where I’m learning more about working with an actual team on real-world projects. However, I feel like I need to do more to stand out and have a stronger software background. Anyone have any tips or suggestions for what I should do on my own time to strengthen my skills?

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

I am trying to figure out how to switch to SWE. I have a masters in civil engineering and have a good background in higher level math. It looks like the better coding boot camps are quite expensive. The alternative is another masters in CS which is the same cost as many boot camps. Any recommendations on picking between a coding boot camp and getting another masters degree in CS? I’m looking to get into the best position possible after getting an education in CS (get a job quick and good pay).

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. My main argument to choose blockchain is the easy entry with little experience and high salary, I plan on growing my skills during the bear market and get a job once the market recovers. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.
