Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

And thank you for all the advice. If we ever cross paths at an event, say “Vatican Cameos” to me and I’ll buy you a drink
I would say MBB wouldn’t do any projects under $250k. Even these last for maybe 4 weeks with limited resources
There isn't a clear cut dollar figure. I've done small and large analytics projects.
$100K maybe.
Smallest I've done is$25k but that was a small part of a larger project.
But you are also likely to compete against the big 4, which can go down to 10k or even 5k, if it is an simple data cleaning and plug into the platform job.
I'm big4 and we never do work that small. Like I said the absolute smallest project I've ever done is $25K which was a simple one off model build. The economics simply don't work on stuff this small unless it is a one off proof of concept at which point we usually do the work for free.
Most other projects are $100K min. The vast majority of "real" projects I've worked on have been closer to $750K - 1M.
Thank you! So for the startup crowd like me, there’s a definite market in the 5/10/25/50 space without running into the big dogs
I'd say so. There is a space in the middle market that really makes sense to play in. Even big4 is to expensive for most mm firms.
Not that I'm aware of.
What type of analytics do you specialize in?
Big4 doesn't play in this space much. I suspect your competition is with other startups.
One of the problems is that companies with small budgets typically have unrealistic expectations. They will have scope statements like "Find me a new customer segment" and expect you to run a magic algorithm and get results. They also will have little useful data and no resources to dedicate.
On top of that it's really hard to patch together a consultancy out of $25-50k gigs. You'll spend more on sales and bench time than you'll get in profits.
Now I'm not trying to shit on your dream. Just suggesting that you need to find a different way to meet the clients where they are and scale.
Have you considered developing a niche analytics product that SMB clients can pay for on an XaaS basis? That would give them a gentle on ramp and put the onus of data gathering on them. You could provide consultancy around the product to help them.
Very true. So you either have to educate them about why a combustion engine is better, or you have to meet them where they are and talk in horse terms. The latter is a lot easier.
There was an article in the WSJ today about customer scores. Something like that would provide a great basis for an XaaS service providing real time actionable data about which customers are worth spending money on. I could see you selling that at a business level with a clear value prop, and skipping the whole conversation about data science and analytics.
I hear ya. It's easy to get so involved with the fun stuff that you lose sight of the business prop. But you have to see the situation through your client's eyes and develop accordingly.
How small is small? Like 5k?
Thanks - appreciate the insight!
Thanks. Do any of the shops have any kind of partner network or referral system for stuff that isn’t worth their while? Appreciate all the insights
Trying to figure out where I can carve out a reasonable niche
Marketing analytics and machine learning. Things like attribution analysis, unstructured text mining for customer needs/product development, and time series forecasting based on marketing data (largely search)
We have and we are. Tough part is figuring out what people actually need. In a lot of cases they think they need faster horses
