Looking for guidance. I’ve been in people manager roles (in director/senior leader capacity) for the last 5 years now, and prior to that I was a “rockstar” Project Manager. I’ve worked really hard to get to the position I’m in today, but I’ve been recently asked to move from my current role to a senior IC role to take on a highly visible Program for the company, with some very senior stakeholders. I feel conflicted as it does feel like I would be backtracking in many ways. Thoughts?

I don't know if a highly visible role with major stakeholders would be a step back. A role offer like that shows that they trust you to not only do good work, but also to be a good face for the program. It could lead to a lot of excellent networking opportunities and even open some career doors.

I always look at role changes in terms of impact and career progression. Does this new role allow you to make a bigger impact and will it advance your career? Advancing your career rarely happens in a straight line and no legit senior leader I know cares how many people you have under you. They care about the impact you make on their business. Assuming this is a genuine request with solid impact potential and the ability to cultivate new senior relationships, it could be a really awesome move.

I like this approach - it's simple but direct. And it's good that you know what you want, it's harder to get you to back down then so definitely stand your ground!

New fish looking for career guidance.

I'm a corporate recruiter with 3 years of experience. Finishing my degree in HRM 5/2022. I'm thinking of getting my SHRM -CP shortly after graduation.

I'm not sure of where to go after that, but I doubt I will stick with recruiting or my current firm.

Has anyone here started off in recruiting and branched out to other HR functions? Do you like your new role? Do you wish you stuck with recruiting?

Would love any general advice on showing I’m ready to be promoted beyond sharing my desire to be when the situation is appropriate. Thanks!

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.

How do you get good at thinking on your feet? I find I always need time to think and analyse before being able to answer client queries (even those that are considered simple by others). I don't want to rush and get it wrong. I avoid phone calls for this reason which isn't great when you're in the service industry so it's starting to impact my career.
