My seniors really enjoy "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. My sophomores enjoy Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck.
I also instantly thought of this poem since it has also resonated with me all these years.
Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, Refugee by Alan Gratz, The Raven (Poe), The Lottery (Shirley Jackson), and The Veldt (Ray Bradbury)
Long Way Gone by Beah & my generally our cellphone addicted students are children of “The Veldt” Bradbury, so Love that one, too. 😉
The first chapter in “And the Mountains Echoed” it’s a bed time story and sooooooo perfect for discussions on right/wrong , intention, morals, - there’s no clear answer but always a lively discourse !!!!!! Novel is not appropriate for middle school kids but first chapter, in my opinion , is great
"Fern Hill" by Dylan Thomas-- ties in with any other story, movie about the loss of childhood innocence. My favorite poem of all time!
A Dream within a Dream .. E Poe
Students really.seem to connect and read different meaning into it depending on their experiences. I find that it has lots of figurative language and imagery that can be discussed. It often turns into one of those lessons that gets up and teaches itself.

"A Journey" by Edith Wharton and "The Chaser" by John Collier
The Road by Cormac McCarthy is my top choice! It’s packed with imagery, 🔥 hope, a Pulitzer winner, and for those who think their grammar must be perfect - Not at all! 😂🤣😍
