Overthinking the logistics of lunch with my judge: I’m going out for lunch tomorrow with my judge and other chambers staff to celebrate my departure. It’ll be an expensive-ish restaurant. How should I expect payment to go? Should I put down my card and offer to split, or bring cash and offer to pay back whoever pays? I’ve been stressing out over this for two weeks now 🫠

Offer to pay and be gracious when your judge inevitably buys your lunch.

Don’t stress. If it’s a celebration for you, I’d imagine at the very least you won’t be expected to pay so go into it with that mindset. If it turns out that everyone splits the bill then just do that. I’m sure your waiter will be able to handle that.

My judge was always very scrupulous on the no payment for him or me thing. We always split the bill no matter what bc of the ethics rules. So don't be surprised if that happens. I would offer to put my card in but if he is like my judge he would ask for separate checks from the start.

My judge usually pays for the departing clerks and everyone else gives my career clerk cash to cover their portion of the bill

My judge paid for birthday lunches, departure lunches, etc.

But also, just ask one of the other clerks or whatever clerk you replaced how this goes.

I applied to a job at KPMG and did the first two rounds of interviews, general interview, then case study and competency. Never before have I had such a positive feedback at the end of an interview of the 2nd, both said really like me, I did well etc.
It's now been 3 weeks since the interview and I still haven't heard back from the team other than the odd HR email saying they are following up with them. Is there something going on internally, I.e hiring freeze in the London office atm?

Still WFH? What are other chambers doing for task management? Our chambers has been keeping up with assignments, incoming emails needing judge’s eyes, and written orders, all through Microsoft Planner. We share PDFs through Sharepoint folders. Although we still email draft orders back and forth, the system seems to work well enough. We still aren’t operating at our previous capacity because it takes 10x the number of steps to get a motion heard or an order entered—90% of our workload.

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?

Is it the smart move to take a pay cut and clerk for a judge?

Little context: I was an ED student, full time paralegal/clerk throughout my law school experience, and a single mother. I did not take advantage of the law school extracurriculars and missed out on clerk application deadlines my final year (2020). Would it benefit me to take a pay cut as a transactional clerk by about $20k to work as a clerk for a year then re-enter firm life? I’m transactional and enjoy that line of work.

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.
