Is it the smart move to take a pay cut and clerk for a judge?

Little context: I was an ED student, full time paralegal/clerk throughout my law school experience, and a single mother. I did not take advantage of the law school extracurriculars and missed out on clerk application deadlines my final year (2020). Would it benefit me to take a pay cut as a transactional clerk by about $20k to work as a clerk for a year then re-enter firm life? I’m transactional and enjoy that line of work.

Depends, especially because you’re interested in transactional and not lit. If a federal judge or a judge in your state’s highest court, yes. If for a judge on Delaware Chancery Court, definitely yes (very valuable experience for transactional attorneys).

If you’re clerking for a state trial court judge and you don’t want to move to litigation, probably not.

Thanks for the advice! Chancery Court is the most competitive and I was middle of the list in my class so I don’t think I have a chance to clerk for a chancellor.

So I have a friend who likes to say “you don’t get your dream job, you make it” in response to my dissatisfaction with my job. I think i understand her intent but it never sat well with me. Today it finally hit me that, while it’s meant to be motivational in a “you are responsible for your own happiness” kind of way, it’s a little gaslighty as if positive thinking alone can change a toxic culture. Thoughts?

Hello FishBowl,

I’m in the final rounds of my interview process for a NYC Hedge fund, non tech role. The recruiter mentioned the compensation package is bonus heavy which can be multiples of base salary. Though they will guarantee a full bonus (sign on + year end) for my first year. 300k target

My current role/company is salary focused so I’m out of my element negotiating the bonuses.

What type of questions should I ask the recruiter about the bonus payouts? Vesting?

Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?
