The younger generation is definitely pushing back a little. Which I give them props for. Problem is their work quality in general isn’t as high as you’d hope for someone who is willing to make the pushback. Thus the senior people just complain about them like every older generation does seemingly.
It’s not unpaid, it’s part of the job requirements for which your salary is paid.
It’s only part of the job requirements if it says so in the job offer and/or job description. If it’s consistent and that disclaimer isn’t there, it is unpaid and you cheated yourself.
OT can definitely be necessary but I would refuse if it was consistent. I’m salaried so it is not paid if I have to do it.
My thoughts are simple: if I’m working overtime, I take my salary and divide by the hours I’m working to get my real hourly wage for that time period. I will not allow myself to discount my work beyond a certain threshold.
In the last couple years, I’ve noticed a decline in the amount of time staff is willing to work. There are a few exceptions, but most barely do the minimum for busy season hours. I’m a younger millennial, but even the older Gen Zs seem vastly different than me.
I think many younger people are realising and seeing that there is more to life than work. Probably the internet has played a roll with videos and exposure of some older people regretting not taking time off when they young and able to
I thought working unpaid OT was illegal in many states?
Depends on your exempt/non-exempt status
My exemption status got switched with this last DOL rule change, so now I'm eligible to be paid for any time I work over 8 hours, but now, I'm watched like a hawk to make sure I don't get overtime. Feels like a step back.
Does your hourly pay yield a similar paycheck to when you were salaried?
