PI isn’t for me. The high volume makes it impossible to practice law the way I would prefer and doing everything fast and loose is not the type of attorney I want to be.

Nice to see an honest take. It's also refreshing for the masses to hear something like this. 8/10 posts are something like "I'm making shit money doing X, but it can't be my fault so I'm going to go to PI to chase an easy buck" but they fail to realize it's a different animal then they think it is from the outside and they're screwed in PI too.

Hate to burst your bubble, but all litigation feels that way. If not high volume, you have low volume complex cases, which feels like high volume.

I say that after switching what i practice at three different types of firms (big mid and small firms).

At the small firm, i have half the cases i used to. But everything is less organized and i have 0 templates so i have to work harder. Plus, cases are more complicated and worth less.

Obv that is just my experience but i cannot imagine it being very different if i kept hoping around.

like

Yeah well thats probably the real issue. You shouldnt ever have 150 cases.

Thats too much idc what anyone says, its too much unless you have associates under you.

There are firms that do PI and do it right. Maybe to start, you have to the types of cases that don't lend themselves to a slow thorough process but you learn on those and move to complex, multi-victim or big, life-changing damages cases with experience. For those, you have to be more detail oriented and thorough. Those are a "turn and burn" deal.

like

This is correct. I have done Plaintiff's high end med mal/catastrophic injury in small firms for 30 years and the partners have always made good money. You definitely need to be detail oriented and thorough, and you definitely need to have detail oriented, thorough, and knowledgeable staff. Very, very different from the PI settlement mill practice.

I’m not in PI but I feel like this is any litigation experience. Could just be me though.

I hear you OP. It honestly is not for everyone because it is so fast paced. There is a lot of money to be made but I understand that money isn't everything. Sounds like it might be time for you to start looking for something else.

At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)
