They won’t give you Director unless you’re coming from McKinsey or something.
Even if no M role is open, you can ask to be considered for it after applying for SA.

What firm? I’d also say that even though you don’t see an active posting for an M role doesn’t mean they won’t hire you in as an M. Firms will bring on talent to ensure strong pipeline of talent.
Just apply to the SA role and inform the recruiter your intent.

If you already have a few years of M under your belt, you likely qualify for their SM role. The SM at strategy&/PwC is a glorified M role and not equivalent to SM at other B4 given that it’s not the role before partnership and doesn’t have any sales targets. That said, they’ll still likely try to hire you in laterally as an M
