Quit firm for burnout, took 3 months off, went in-house thinking it’d help. Good job, better balance, but same burnout. Anyone else feel like even in-house didn’t ultimately “fix” anything?

In the same boat (though I only took 2 weeks off) - like yes I’m a little more motivated with the change of environment but ultimately realizing that I don’t think I like what I do. And without financial obligations/ liabilities, I’m questioning whether it’s worth doing at all.

I had a conversation with my boss today about not staying past the end of this year. A fairly long transition/notice period for them but a light at the end of the tunnel for me. F**k it. Life is too damn short. Let me know if you want to talk more about your situation!

What industry are you currently in?

Three months is likely not enough to heal burnout. Perhaps you can take another three months off and try some new passion projects. It helps to reconnect with who you are outside of law.

That’s my plan. :) I’m in-house right now which was so much better than private practice…but still not exactly where I want to be.

I'm accepting an offer with a new company... Start in early Aug. Senior Manager role, though in this company that equates to Manager at most consulting farms. They did not had hunt me. I came to them for the job.

I have COVID delayed vacations planned for the last week in August and the first week in October.

Should I just cancel one of them? Or should I at least put both on the table and see what they say? They're going to hire me either way, but I wonder if it's a bad start to ask for both.

I have over 12 years in B2B sales/sales management experience along with a graduate degree. I am wanting to shift gears and I am at a point where I can invest time in myself to learn through practical experience. The new industry I am wanting to pursue is real estate investment. I have read all the books but want some hands on experience on the property management side. How could I best leverage my skills for a role in this, and what should my expectations be for negotiation in compensation?

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

I am also kind of an academic at heart, but I live in a locale where professorial jobs are pretty limited and we're rooted here now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
