I am financially secure (husband now has a high earning job) and looking at what options for "moon shots" at chances of real wealth generation with my years in Big 4 (10+). Month to month cash flow isn't a concern anymore so i can focus on opportunities for bigger pay days. Ideas from the hive mind?

A start-up is going to be your best moonshot. With that in mind, what is your background? Accounting roles at start-ups, unless high level director positions, give pretty poor options compared to other roles. If you can lean into a senior director role (or better yet, leverage your experience toward non-accounting roles) you could likely get higher total comp and moonshot potential.

Let's also talk companies - if you keep your eyes peeled there are companies that have higher potential than others. I'd look for Series C/D level start-ups in the software space with high margin. That is the general recipe for high valuations which is where you get your unicorn/moonshot value.

Agreed. When negotiating salary, if you want to gamble take the initial salary and only push back on the equity. Or if you wanna get really crazy, go big on the options and tell them you are fine is the salary is slightly reduced to accommodate because you believe in the success of the company. But be prepared to get screwed. I was at a startup and my equity was underwater within 6 months LOL.

Startups probably?

Moon shots are for people who need lottery tickets. If you have a lot of wealthy just invest in the steady gain assets. Like going to the gym, the best way to lose weight is a steady diet and work ethic, not a crash diet. Similarly, diversify in the SPY and indexes, get a little bit of BTC if that’s something you want to diversity against inflation with, etc.

Start putting in money in VC/PE funds. Most top funds have buy ins of $250k-$2.5m. That’s the way to financial freedom.

If you want to leverage your personal background for a “moonshot” it would most likely be with a lmm pe firm as a controller or ceo with equity options. If you’re talking about just generally trying to form a vc backed startup, obviously that, but best of luck!

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?

My partner and I are in the process of buying a PHEV that qualifies for the full non-refundable federal tax credit. We will both owe taxes in excess of the current $7,500 cap (will see if that increases with the new budget bill). If we both own the car (i.e. both names on the title), how do we manage filing for the tax credit when filing separately? Do we just pick one of us to file? Is there guidance on splitting the credit across owners? Does it matter what order our names are on the title?
