Recently my kids watched a documentary about WW2, and they asked me a difficult question to answer, why did our country use the atomic bomb in Japan? Can anyone help me with a neutral answer?

You can’t soften history. The why is documented, maybe say I don’t know let’s try to learn more about it together and research it with them. Shorter less committed answer: the President at the time having heavy counsel and advice from his military advisors calculated that the use of the Atomic bomb at that point would end the war. While this cost many Japanese lives, it saved many American lives. This is the tragic cost of war.

I agree with you. We cannot alter or soften history. We've learned a lot of valuable lessons so might as well educate and inspire the younger generation.

I don't know how to answer this as neutral as possible to a kid. There really isn't a way around this. It's a touchy subject. I agree with US Army1, perhaps it would be better if you tell your kids that you can try to learn more about it together.

I am thankful that my children never aske me with that question because I don't know how to explain to them that our country is not different from countries like China and Russia. I hate to break it to them that our country has been killing many people in many countries over the years like Syria and Afghanistan.

I agree with the first comment. Making your answer neutral is the same as altering history. Give them the real answer.
