Sorry, but why on earth did you ever go back to private practice? People are desperately willing to take hundreds of thousands in pay cut to go in-house just to escape the toxic environment of private practice…
I’ve been applying to in-house jobs for over 10 years, just missed a recent opportunity because the company ultimately decided to hire their outside counsel. If I were to ever get out of private practice, I would never think to go back. I officially give up trying to find such a job, as the applicant pool makes it impossible to compete unless you know somebody.
I can tell you personally I got out of the practice of law altogether because of the stress and what my work schedule was doing to my kids. I never got to see them because I was working all the time. Yes, I was able to buy them whatever they wanted but I found out what they truly wanted was me in their life not another gift. So I stopped practicing and became a private investigator instead. Not only am I happier due to the stress being much lower, but I can work my own hours now and it turns out I make considerably more money than I ever did as an attorney. Sometimes, even though you spent all the time and money on law school, you just realize it’s not worth it. Everybody is different but it wasn’t worth it to me anymore. It sounds like you need to take a look at your life and see if this is really the path you want to stay on? I hope this helped and good luck whatever you decide.
Feel free to reach out to me on here through messages if you decide you want to take a similar path and need any additional advice. I have helped numerous attorneys change their career path when they weren’t happy practicing law anymore. I can tell you not a single one has chosen to go back into the practice of law. Good luck I wish you nothing but the best and success in the future.
I’m in house in a product counseling role for an emerging tech company and I feel this way often. Always having to learn technical parts of the product and reviewing for legal risks in a new area makes it difficult for me to feel I have a handle on things.
I keep reminding myself that it’s okay and that I’m learning and problem solving at the same time, instead of feeling like I’m not equipped to do well. I trust you are at your firm because you are capable and you will continue to succeed. I’d recommend you trust yourself a little more, and ask for help as early as possible.
I went from a small firm to a large company in-house role for nine years the into Big Law. I had stress in the small firm, stress in-house, and stress in a big firm. The source of stress was different in each role, but it was still there. Just keep doing the work, bringing your A-game every day, and keep building the broadest network you can.
Just keep applying and networking. Where are you based?
For sure! Northeast Ohio (greater Cleveland).
No, if you screw up just hire outside counsel….imagine trying to decide if writ of habeas corpus should be granted
Drama!
