Hoping judges deny requests that would save your client money so that you can hit a billable target encapsulates a lot of what is wrong with this profession.

My client is the insured. Yes it’s technically the insurance company too, but cost cutting measures that eat into quality of representation hurt the insured imo. Like zoom depositions vs in person. Yes you can create a decent record on zoom but it’s just not the same as in person for evaluating witness credibility, impeachment, etc.
I enjoy going to court. It’s not to increase billables. To me, walking through the halls of justice, sitting in the galley and chatting with other attorneys, rising to address the court, representing my clients, making oral arguments, even just dressing the part, are all aspects of the job that break the monotony of the desk work. It’s a different job if I’m just chained to my desk every day and the only difference is I throw on a blazer for zoom court.

I enjoy going to court too, and I can see many are thinking my only motivation with this post is billables. I don’t want to be a virtual litigator, I want to be in court because it’s exciting and what I signed up for...I would’ve stayed doing boring consulting work if I wanted to be at a desk all day every day. But anyone pretending to not care about how their billables are impacted is lying for likes.

I never thought I’d miss going to court, but I do. I appreciate not having to drive for CMCs and status conferences, but I miss arguing motions in front of a judge so I can see facial expressions.
