I work for WM but not in HCOL so not 100% certain, but believe for SM it’s in $200k-225k + range plus 15% target bonus. D would probably be in the $250-275+ range with 20% bonus target. There are a myriad of other benefits at the D level vs SM, but the leash is much shorter and the interview process is typically much longer and more demanding. If you started at WM right out of school avg timeline to D with WM tends to be 11-13 YOE. My guess is you’ll be pushed/offered for SM based on YOE unless prior exp is all in relevant consulting.
Have seen several director experienced hires get the axe in a year, due to not meeting expectations, regardless of YOE.
Don’t know what practice or industry vertical you’re considering, but if you don’t have a proven business development track record in professional services, go for senior manager and work your way up to director.
Echoing this... at SM the expectations are lesser and it helps to learn the business before you're under the magnifying glass. SMs dont have origination targets but generally produce in the $3mm range annually. Directors jump to 6-10mm annually so be aware of that, if you're bringing a book of work with you or going to have to pound the pavement.
Directors also have retention and team growth targets, so your network will be important as well, in addition to offering development.
So just be honest with yourself and think about ability to hit targets early. Nothing wrong with coming in as an experienced SM and working into D over the first year or 2, or if you think you can hit $7mm+ and grow the team, take a swing at D. Hope that helps!
