Thank u for sharing this nightmare scenario (sorry you were ambushed by personnel change). Yikes! Is new manager open to 1:1 off-line conversation to explore their greatest challenges & how you can support them in your scope of responsibilities? Often, if you can help them "look good", they will be less toxic or controlling. Most micro-managers are deep down very insecure in their role &/or promoted to their highest level of INcompetency (for whatever reason). Next step (if new manager unwilling to chat 1:1 or chat does not end well) is to approach your HR dept. (if company has an effective HR dept.). Also, check-in with your teammates & possibly new manager's former teammates to see if they can provide you with more effective ways to work w/new manager. Agree w/"Director 1", after 3-4 months of trying, start looking for either new Dept./Team to join (easier to do in-house switchover; sounds like you generally like new company), or look out-of-house for a new workplace (won't look as good on your CV ... you'll look like a job-hopper, since you only recently took this position). Hope that helps.
Meanwhile, in upcoming interviews, I plan to ask, "Are there any upcoming changes in the team's Senior positions (P.I., Sr. researchers) that I should be aware of?"
Give it 3 months. Look for a new job if new manager is still toxic.
