I do. Pros include being fast-paced, entrepreneurial, potentially fast promotion. Main con is that if the company fails, you have to jump ship, and even if it succeeds, it’ll be acquired, which could have a positive or negative change to your situation.
A company that only has a PhI/II asset will of course have greater risk / reward.
I think about it in the following way: first determine what position you can get in an established pharma. You should demand at least one notch up at a biotech to compensate for risk.
I’ve seen multiple people leave to biotechs, settling for smaller roles, and being disappointed. Unlike with internet startups, biotech equity doesn’t usually lead to huge payoffs for employees.
Thanks, really helpful. Were your friends/acquaintances who were disappointed with smaller roles dissatisfied with the comp, impact they had, professional growth, something else or all the above?
