Senior associate here, thinking about leaving BigLaw to become a partner at a small boutique. Two questions: (1) For those who’ve made a similar jump, how long did it take to feel financially “whole”? I’d be taking about 1/3 paycut but get 1/3 of revenue I bring in. (2) How hard is it to get clients through the door with a decent referral/professional network, assuming I would be able to devote at least 30-40% of my time to BD at the start and have full flexibility on my rates/types of cases?

No one can answer this. You have to put in the time and get that pipeline built no matter what, you have no choice. If they are giving 1/3 revenue they expect you to build a book. How long it takes you is secondary. However long you think it takes, it will take longer. But the book you build is the key to freedom you may not have had in big law.

Also you need to ask about rate flexibility now.

I went solo for a bit but had a client I was serving. Most people I know of went solo said what I’ve said. You’re putting metrics to something that really just needs time and effort. You could come out of the gate, rocking it, or it may take you a year or two or five. You don’t know what until you do it, that’s the point im making. But since you’re immediately focusing on how important BD has to be, I think you’re in a good position. Leaning against.

it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I submit that the set of people who prefers to have only one of those two options, always and forever, is the null set. which means it DOES NOT MATTER because the correct answer is always going to be "make both possible." you're welcome, HR departments everywhere.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.
