Senior associate here, thinking about leaving BigLaw to become a partner at a small boutique. Two questions: (1) For those who’ve made a similar jump, how long did it take to feel financially “whole”? I’d be taking about 1/3 paycut but get 1/3 of revenue I bring in. (2) How hard is it to get clients through the door with a decent referral/professional network, assuming I would be able to devote at least 30-40% of my time to BD at the start and have full flexibility on my rates/types of cases?

it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

With the various RTO rumors/fear out there and in the absence of spring/summer/fall(?) bonuses. Would you consider coming into the office more if your firm offered bonuses linked to days in the office (coupled with billable targets, of course)?
