What does it mean when you apply to a bunch of jobs for which I am a good fit and you hear nothing back for these jobs? For some applications, I'm approaching two weeks since submission. I did get a call back to the first position I applied to; however, after the lab manager saw how much experience I had he said to release me, far too overqualified, tell him he should be applying to Senior Research Associate positions. I have ten years lab experience.

I applied for a counsel position with a large local university almost two months ago. The application period closed about two weeks ago, and a friend of a friend works as a counsel in the same role. I understand the complexities of the times and hiring constraints, but I’m wondering if I need to follow up/reach out through my friend or just keep waiting. I realize it may vary by company, but does putting a referrers work email (with their knowledge and permission) on the relevant portion of the job application help increase the chances that your application is seen?

Usually it's the part of the application where it asks how you heard about the position and if you select the "company X employee" option, it will ask for their company email.
