You should be grateful for everything. Now go to your room.
The job market is horrid right now.
That said, there’s nothing wrong with dipping your toes into unfamiliar waters. See what’s out there if you don’t feel appreciated (none of us do).
I always keep an eye out for other opportunities. Nothing is guaranteed in this business so if anything you’re being proactive
Yes you should be grateful. I’m unemployed
Be grateful but not complacent. No matter what happens to you or our industry, the world's economic engine continues running. Inflation silently chugs along which is insidiously eating away at your ability to fund your life with the same money.
At some point we must all recognize when it's time to pivot because our industry is no longer in demand, and our salary is not keeping up with inflation. What is that next chapter that might have better odds of success/being in demand? it's scary to think about but necessary.
I firmly believe creative people make great small business owners. We know marketing and can actually build our own creative. We know how to sell and understand brand strategy. We are typically good at persuading people and inspiring others. Most idiots who start a small business know nothing about marketing and either have to pay other people or they don't do it at all because they don't get how important it is. Think about local businesses in your area and how terrible their brand presence is - think trades companies or other services people will always need.
the answer is a resounding yes…
Rising Star
Moving to another agency is potentially a precarious move at the moment because you’re easier to lay off (require less severance) if you’ve been at a company for a short amount of time. That being said, I don’t think anyone’s necessarily safe and secure in their employment in this industry right now, so perhaps it’s the ideal time to take a risk.
When ever I struggle I always remind myself that someone else is probably praying, dying, for the life I have.
It’s ok to be both
holy yes
Don't be grateful to have a job. Be grateful to have a career. There's a difference.
I want to become a CD eventually but if an inhouse tells me to “take one step down” to be a copywriter, i’d do it.
Thanks everyone. Appreciate the perspective 🙏
Yes 100%. We all have our own timelines. I’m behind too, but tbh, I don’t even want to grow higher
