Hi I've joined Harman in May but hasn't been assigned to any project yet. I've asked hr and reporting manager they said they're working on it and there's nothing to be worried about However I just want to know if there's anything I should be concerned about what's the bench policy? FYI: Compatibility-wise Macs are terrible for almost all of the software and applications law firms use.
I’m clerking right now and my junky government hp is approximately 1,000x faster and more reliable than my skadden Mac was running the virtual machine and probably cost 1/5 the price

Its mostly all the bloatware the firms install

The beauty of the ThinkPad is that they all look the same, but one could be 10 years newer than another.
The computers themselves are fine. The problem is all the bloatware/security crap the firms impose that make them unusable.

Wait until you find out how much they pay levono for the “leased” laptops
Straight up incompetence. I don’t get why these firms can’t just adopt MAC friendly environments and programs.

I actually like Lenovo, some models are better than other. Was also at a firm that used Microsoft and it was crap.
Macs are trash.
Spoken like someone who hasn't used one recently. The m1/m2 processors are simply superior.

My firm is transitioning to give us the option to choose between Mac laptops and Lenovo next year.

Which firm?
Debevoise uses Macs.
We just got new dells that are slightly less trash than our previous dells but … I think to some extent no machine is going to be perfect because (1) laptops are just not designed to be used as much as consistently as we use them and (2) all the security software that gets loaded takes a toll on the machines overall performance
Our problem is the latency issue(s) connecting to all the sh*t stored on one drive and firm servers. Whoever thought “cloud based” is better should be covered in sugar and sat next to an ant hill on a hot day in July.
I used a Mac at my last midlaw firm through our remote citrix login every single day. It was so much smoother than even being in office at my current big law firm with the lenovo. But it's not necessarily the computer-it's all the bloatware/security stuff big law firms make you install. That still hasnt stopped me from pushing for macs with m1 or m2 for the last couple years every chance I get.
Being able to work a six hour flight without needing to plug in was fabulous.
Does anyone know why firms don’t install desktop computers? I work in the office in NYC 4 days a week and rarely work from home. I get the laptops allow flexibility but wouldn’t it be more efficient to use desktops and then just keep a laptop at home for the times you do need to work from home?

Because you’d be paying twice as much for hardware and software licenses. Also more IT burden with two types of devices and local files.
I got a new one recently and it was a game changer, suddenly my laptop is portable and things are quick.
Lots of Mac vs PC chatter here but Lenovo vs Dell/HP etc. is more relevant. I think you can get better versions of the latter for cheaper and still stay in the windows OS environment.
