So I’ve been unemployed for the past few months due to being DOGE’d at the consulting firm I had been working at for the past year. I’m trying to pivot into GIS and am going back to school in the spring to get a graduate certificate. Also to give some context, I have an environmental science degree. Currently I’m learning Python, QGIS, and starting an ESRI MOOC this week.

Would anyone here have any advice advice to offer? I’m also looking for a mentor so let me know if you’d like to connect.

Have you ever looked into local or online GIS user groups? Sometimes local groups let you work together and volunteer for small mapping projects and it can be a great hands-on way to learn. I'd ask around and see if something like this exists where you live. Good luck!

Hi. I am a Transition teacher in California. I would like to know what is the ratio of students to staff for community outings in your districts? I have been teaching in my district for 20+ years and it has always been 4:1 ratio for our moderate/severe transition classes. Now our director is saying it's 6:1 and I don't feel like this is safe for our students.

4PQE. UK. Have been offered a job at another firm but they've only agreed to match my salary. I went back asking for more and have been sternly told that's not possible as I'm already being offered more than what their bandings allow.

The new firm seems like it would be better for the sector I'm specialising in but anyone else I hear that moves tends to get a considerable payrise! I feel reluctant to move if I'm not getting a big pay jump... Is moving for the same pay a done thing?

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.
