So I’ve got a theory that mentally healthy ppl with good boundaries and happy childhoods don’t go into consulting, and for the ppl who do they get addicted to the variable cycle of insane stress and negative feedback interrupted by intermittent excessive praise bc it feels safe and familiar in a way that actually safe environments don’t.

I was on a project where an analyst interviewing for a role on the team had a passion outside work that required them to sign out 6-8pm a few days a week but they said they'd always communicate where the work was when they needed to sign off and they'd log back in at 8pm to finish anything time sensitive. My senior leader was so put off by this and asked me why I'd want this person on my team. 😃

The analyst left 6 months later for a job most people would think was a downgrade. But I was so happy for them.

I remember when I was just out of school my uncle’s best friend (very drunk, but very successful) told me I would do great in consulting because I was smart, delightful, and had a crushing fear of failure. 🥰

I have also had this theory for a few years. We’re also in a desperate search for acceptance and thus bend over backwards to make it work.

Is it possible some people have mental toughness?

There are people who build high rise buildings, work at hundreds of feet high. Not everyone can do it but those guys are built differently.

There's something a little wild about seeing people describe consulting as a field for mental toughness. What percentage of consultants have ever dropped below the top layer of Maslow's hierarchy in their entire adult lives?

Interesting

Sounds about right

It seems I don't want to get feedback because it makes me feel people are critical of me?

You got that based on a single line?

Maybe, but I think the industry is big enough to have people from all walks of life.

There are many reasons why people in the working world are not direct when speaking. They are one of the following:

* They pretend they are experts
* They are inexperienced
* They are full of themselves
* They don't know what they are looking for
* They love to talk

Even if these people have good intentions, be careful of them. Your time is valuable, and the best thing for you to do is to be direct back at them.
