There are many reasons why people in the working world are not direct when speaking. They are one of the following:

* They pretend they are experts
* They are inexperienced
* They are full of themselves
* They don't know what they are looking for
* They love to talk

Even if these people have good intentions, be careful of them. Your time is valuable, and the best thing for you to do is to be direct back at them.

I’ve been working for a small investment firm for about a year and am having some issues with my boss. My manager scheduled a feedback conversation and I know it's bc I've made some noticeable mistakes lately due to moving too fast, not being able to focus, racing thoughts, etc. I'm seeing a therapist about whether I have ADHD and if so, what tx looks like; we started the intake process which will be continued in my 2nd appointment, which is after the feedback convo meeting. Is it worth telling my mgr something eg I recognize the careless mistakes and I'm in the process of seeing tx to help?

Monday Morning rumination: unsolicited advise is criticism.

Much to reflect on with this topic. Last week I was told in a 1:1 with a new contact that I was “too direct”. After some time chewing on the conversation I was struggling to place the emotions I was feeling. Turns out I was feeling guilty and shame for being me, for taking up space. Lesson of the week: unsolicited advice is a criticism of you, a micro aggression of who you are, and being “too much”. What would you do??

It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. Have you ever dealt with a colleague that believes in extremely (in my opinion) outdated or even just false claims and treats them as scientific facts? I work with several older men but one of them practices "provocative therapy" as in you just play the devil's advocate with your patient and side with the negative half of their thinking. In theory I could see this working situationally, but as a whole philosophy regardless of the patient's issue I think it's ridiculous.

Not everyone is a good listener.

Most people have a habit of listening to find a way to relate your story to their lives and then tell you how it relates.

A small percentage of people will listen to you, show empathy, find ways to help you, cheer you on, and overall, keep the focus on you and your needs.

Next time you have a conversation, find out who's really listening to you.

- Are you trying to change someone's behavior/belief?

When I was managing consulting projects, I told my teams that they should feel free to communicate with me if they had any issues or concerns. However, I also wanted their ideas about what they would do to solve the issue they are raising.

Situations can get "extreme," or small issues may arise when you are in the heat of the moment trying to accomplish your goals. That's normal.

But to change the pattern and prevent Burnout, you need to communicate with an action.

Do you know how burned out you are exactly?

According to psychologists Herbert Freudenberger (who invented the term "Burnout") and Gail North, there are 12 stages.

Burnout has a wide range, from "I can't wait for the day to be over" to having a complete mental or physical collapse.

Make sure you pay attention to your symptoms and not lose track of who you are and where you need to be mentally, physically, and emotionally.

There are many common symptoms of Burnout. E.g., Changes in sleeping patterns, negativity, low energy, lack of motivation, not caring about work. The list can go on for a while.

What's triggering you to feel exhausted, negative, or lose your motivation?

We all start our jobs full of hope and promise. That same hope and promise may still be there. However, the eventual grind or consistent overcommitment of anything will trigger you towards Burnout if you are not aware of them.

Be aware if you are consistently over-committing to something that will burn you out. Take breaks. Change your patterns. Whatever you need to do. Just don't overdo it.
