Every good indie filmmaker knows you'd better be offering some equity to main players, deferred pay (i.e. if I get paid, you get paid) and have the best meals on set. Paying out of pocket crew expenses goes without saying and you'd better have flexibility with your scheduling.
Mostly, treat people well, respect their time and don't make them pay to work for you. Also, lean into your existing community since they are more likely to be willing to help you vs. looking strictly at what you can pay them upfront (same for leaning into your current resources vs. expecting strangers to care about your passion project as much as you do). You can't go wrong with these things & you'll build goodwill that could pay off significantly as time goes on. I'm sure some are using AI but that may harm your professional reputation and get you branded as someone taking opportunities from crew and talent. Just my 2 cents as a former indie film company executive.
In props when you have little to no money you just have to think ahead and find props at the cheapest prices possible- this means extra research and better time management
