Amalfi Coast/ Positano (and this coming from a French person)
“Need to”? No. But there’s plenty to do. Especially if you have access to a boat/ can charter one. That way you can also go to the islands.
Assuming you’re flying in and out Naples? You’ll want to spend time there too.
Amalfi coast 1000%!!! I'm Italian, so probably biased lol. But been to both places, there's nothing like the true romance and magic of Amalfi.
Pro
Depends on the season
Perfect timing! Amalfi coast!!
South of france. Easier to rent a car and noodle around provence, the coast etc. if you are a big water/ boat person go for amalfi. If you want a mix of water and exploring villages I say south of france. Driving in amalfi is challenging.

Agree with this.
Positano!
South of France. If you can go during off season lodging will be cheaper. The train system is amazing; Monaco is a great day trip. The seafood and the wine and the markets of Nice are really some of my favorite memories.
Antibes or Saint Tropez
Pro
Totally different vibes. Antibes is charming. St Tropez is expensive showy place with celeb clientele
Pro
Which food and culture do you like better? They’re both great so a matter of personal preference.

Funny that you asked this question, I went through the same thought process for this - picking between Southern France or Amalfi Coast. I ended up picking Amalfi Coast. Here are some suggestions, 1.5 weeks can be a bit in Amalfi coast by itself, depends on your travel style. If 1.5 weeks, I would actually recommend to stay a few days in Ischia as well, it's an island not too far away Capri. So Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Capri, and Ischia. That should give you plenty to do in 1.5 weeks. In addition, Sorrento would be a good base. Southern France I would prefer to go during Spring or early Summer season. But that is just me! 😊

Totally agree with your comment VP. That's why I said depends on the travel style. Interestingly, I prefer Ischia than Capri. But both are beautiful, can't go wrong with either. My husband speaks Italian and we love Ischia as it has more local scenes. Capri is more internationally known.
