Super senior associate (10PQE) just told in no uncertain terms that I have no future at the firm and will not be promoted to counsel/partner. It’s not exactly a situation where I’m being pushed out actively because I broached the topic but clearly it isn’t going to work out for me. Any advice on how to navigate job searching while still needing to do the work?

Start applying to other firms or go in house. Do the minimum to keep your job. But, YOUR job now is finding a new job. Your current job is your side hustle

Don’t go above and beyond. Do what you have to to get through the day, but they obviously aren’t expecting you to stay and so don’t drive yourself into the ground for them during the job search. If you end up getting laid off, 3 months paid leave with website time is standard. Start aggressively applying to other firms or in house now, depending on your preference. Hit up your network hard. And then when you get a new job, take a few weeks off in-between to decompress.

Seconded except the weeks if OP has a book to bring over.

FWIW I had a senior associate tell me this when I was a junior/midlevel and now I’m a partner and they are no longer at the firm. Some people don’t know what they’re talking about and are delusional about their own standing at their firms.

like

Yea I guess it matters where this info came from, but OP is already a 10 year senior associate so imagine it’s coming from the partnership level

likefunny

I mean, can you sit at your firm and continue to make $400k+ base salary indefinitely with none of the responsibilities that come with partnership? Because there are much worse ways to earn a living.

I’m on the same boat but year 9, market is rough. I keep getting rejections so I have stopped looking for now.

I wouldn’t listen to a super senior. You should be having this conversation with a partner

Unfortunately, the Upper Canada Law Society members are very racist. There are many studies to support this assertion. Investigate available funding to start your own practice. Check your contacts, including ex-clients and the market, and ask for referrals. Also, detail the advantages of working with a boutique firm, e.g., lower costs, more time to focus on their file, etc. Otherwise, let the courts decide the dollar value of the unfairness of your situation.

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

My work product is becoming worse and partners are noticing/commenting. I just hate the practice area so much that every time I am asked to do something I just get it done as quickly as possible and can’t be bothered to put in effort. When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
