The good news is that you are not a store-bought chicken, with a stamped sell-by date. The bad news is that advancing age (amplified by bias over digital natives vs adopters) combined with an increasing salary requirements will absolutely combine to narrow your options over time. I wish this was either sporadic or speculative; but holding company diversity studies, particularly in the last decade, show major erosion in the number of over-40s, especially in creative departments. Those of us who continue (I’m in my 60s) find work-arounds: either we go entrepreneurial (my route), use the connections built over a career (going client side is sometimes a better option), or, for the few with big enough reputations—run the string out as far and long as anyone will let them. That can be quite a while: but even the best of the best find the phone not ringing at some point. I know a ton of A+ talent in their 70s who’d love to suit up, if they could. The trick for all of us is to recognize the coming conditions and have your own road map in mind. Is this reversible? Sure—it’s first and foremost a problem rooted in economics and the harsh fact that squeezed agencies are always going to opt for cheaper and good enough over more expensive and proven. All we need is for clients to give agencies an incentive to have some grey hair in the room. I’ll hold my breath, if you will.
On that score, don’t agree: too many folks still bringing it well into their 80s.. Or perhaps, they will have learned the truth that when you hit the bar earlier, there’s unlikely to be a big line.
Eddie brought it so hard, even if he was a little bit rusty. His talent was in full effect - I haven’t laughed that much during SNL in years. And the dinner sketch was so damn good, I couldn’t stop thinking about it and most particularly that look he gives at the end. Frickin perfection. I’ve watched it so many times this week!
Oh my god. That was brilliant. “It don’t matter what my damn name is!”
Urban truth: age enables. To see how, check out Eddie’s “one look speaks volumes” conclusion to the “family dinner” piece.
“Star turn?” “Talen oh his youth?”
Somebody tell me the exact age in which someone becomes irrelevant in our industry. 40? 50? 60? Just curious to know so I can plan on being on the top of my game one day and then on my birthday becoming disposable.
All depends on how well you hold up. Stop drinking, exercise, eat nothing, you’ll be fine.
