Just to add to this post, if you’re big on showing historical movies in class VidAngel is a great tool. Many historical movies like Amistad have inappropriate sections with nudity. VidAngel allows you to skip those sections of the movie before watching.
I do a unit on genocide in my 11/12 grade human geography class and show Hotel Rwanda and it makes a huge impact on the kids. I also show The Good Lie if I have time and that's a great one!
The "America the story of Us" series is really good for US history.
I know it’s not super historical but I became a teacher so I could teach Titanic. Don’t laugh at me lol. I grew out of it!
I like to show Iron Jawed Angels for the Progressive Era (women’s suffrage). After testing, I always show Taking Chance, about escorting a fallen marine home. It’s pretty short, based on a true story, very insightful!
Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee
Yes. US History is taught in the 10th or 11th grade. I also had a few stragglers that joined the class since it was an elective, but they still had the opportunity to learn new things.
My daughter loved “Bridge of Spies” & “Thirteen Days”. )US History junior year) She graduated in ‘18. She had her dad and me watch them. 😊
Cinderella Man for Great Depression. Hairspray (with Travolta) for Civil Rights. The Lost Battalion for WWI. Forrest Gump as a great review of 50s-80s.
Tough question... we have such a packed curriculum to get through in one year for USHST. It is very difficult to show an entire movie in class. However, the first that comes to mind for a history class is Schindler’s List.
The Pianist for the Holocaust is one I always plan on. It does a great job showing what conditions were like in the Jewish ghettos in Poland.
I’m allowed to take my senior class to the movies once a year. We’ve seen Hacksaw Ridge and Midway in the past few years, I would recommend them both for WWII pacific theatre
