Texas associates: how casual are yall in the office? Am in the minority in a polo and lululemon abcs with boots/drivers?

Please don’t wear polyester Lululemon pants with boots.

like

I don’t. That is a much better look (for those that can pull it off). Boots should be worn with real fabric (wool, denim, etc.). There is something bizarre about polyester athleisure pants with ostrich Tecovas. But FWIW I think Lululemon pants look bad with anything other than sneakers

like

Nope! Many corporate associates and partners in my office wear jeans and nice t-shirts with sneakers.

Close enough

At least for Houston, it largely depends on the firm and practice area. In my experience:

Litigation = more formal
Corporate = less formal

National firms = less formal
TX historic firms (including those that have merged with national firms in the last decade) = more formal

If you are practicing litigation at a TX historic firm, expect it to be very formal with suit and tie daily.

Oddly enough, I think NYC is less formal for my firm and clients are certainly less formal in NYC than Houston. When I meet with PE clients in NYC, they are often pretty casual. For example, wearing a Barbour jacket or vest, dress shirt, Lululemon ABC type pants and sneakers. I don’t think I could get away with sneakers in Houston.

like

I’ve heard V&E is formal in all offices and Weil is formal in Dallas but my office follows what A5 alludes to.

I wear quarter zips and chinos with a t shirt underneath

like

Abcs fine. Would typically wear a button down (can be a patterned slightly more casual one)

I looked at those abc pants before because they were recommended. Aren’t they like $100/pair? Maybe I’m way out of touch but that seems like a lot for what they are

Have some self respect and don’t buy plastic pants

like

Lolz did not know lululemon even made pants for guys. Clearly I'm very plugged in to the fashion scene. Slacks and a button down for me in Houston.

jeans and a button/polo most days of the week. untucked. sneakers.

Austin lit: slacks and long sleeve button down Mon-Fri

One key selling point, as they are trying to offer is the opportunity to work one day a week to use for things like training, acquiring certifications or building applications that you are interested in.

This sounds amazing. I don't get that at my current job. So, is this too good to be true? I would like your opinion on this.

With the various RTO rumors/fear out there and in the absence of spring/summer/fall(?) bonuses. Would you consider coming into the office more if your firm offered bonuses linked to days in the office (coupled with billable targets, of course)?

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

What was the hardest class year for you? I used to think first year was by far the hardest but now I’m a third year and I’m really feeling the pressure to step up. I work in finance and at this point I’m expected to handle closing documents, manage first years, draft some portions of major docs, etc. I feel like I’m always frazzled, constantly second guessing if I handled something correctly and anxious to answer calls from clients/OC. The worst part is I think people can tell I’m a mess....

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

I am an m&a junior at a firm that is generally considered a lifestyle firm (pay below market but target hours are lower unless pushing for partner). Over the pandemic period, we have had so many senior associates and paralegals leave that there is no one to ask questions to and I’m doing paralegal work (we are all in survival mode). I’m not convinced the partners in my team (who are aware of the problem but cannot convince management) can recruit people to replace given we pay below market.

I realized recently that I can turn my “super associate” persona at any time. I had it off during covid when my kids needed me and got a bad review. So now it’s back on. I’m responding to midnight emails (and daytime ones in under 20 minutes) and getting work done the same morning. I’m spending countless hours doing edits over edits. I actually don’t like super associate. Why do people live like this 24/7?!? 🤔
