I am an m&a junior at a firm that is generally considered a lifestyle firm (pay below market but target hours are lower unless pushing for partner). Over the pandemic period, we have had so many senior associates and paralegals leave that there is no one to ask questions to and I’m doing paralegal work (we are all in survival mode). I’m not convinced the partners in my team (who are aware of the problem but cannot convince management) can recruit people to replace given we pay below market.

(Cont.) I feel quite trapped and want to go to a firm where I can learn more - I’m quite convinced I don’t want to make partner in my speciality (M&A) and want to take the chance to retool into Funds. Everyone I know thinks I’m crazy for considering leaving right now (they think I should stick it out for one more year). They also say if I join a new firm as a junior I might be kicked round the block as a “new boy” - but I really feel stuck. What should I do?

Leave! It's better to retool as a junior.

Can you switch to Funds in your current firm?

Well if you know you want to do Funds then you should definitely lateral and make it known when you’re interviewing that you want to do Funds. No point in staying where you are where you’re guaranteed to not do the type of work you want.

Lawyer Couples:
I’m currently an associate (no kids) in a very busy corp group (think 50-60 billable weekly). My wife works significantly less (currently part time, 10-15, but hopefully will be full time soon). I find myself getting upset when asked to help with basic household things (trash, cooking etc.) when she’s been lounging around watching Netflix all day. Am I being reasonable or am I a misogynist? How do you deal with one person having significantly more free time than the other?

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.
