3rd Year v15 Biglaw lit associate, curious what people’s experience with going in house as a litigator has been. For those that have made the switch, did you have a sense of whether it was feasible for you to transition back to biglaw?

Does anyone have experience working for a ALSP? How does compensation work (pay and benefits)? Are you an employee or technically an IC? Do you have billable requirements like at a firm? Recent lateral (6ish months). On pace for 2000. Partners keep asking me if I’m liking the quality/type of work I’m getting and telling me to let them know if I feel overwhelmed by my (very manageable) workload. Am I crazy or do they think I’m going to leave for another firm or something six months in?

In big law going on 6 years and I’ve always met my hours, but lately, cannot get enough work to keep busy. It’s been slow for some time, but I didn’t notice because I was working on matters in other offices. Is it time to move on? Are people really going to be laid off for not hitting hrs?

I have a clerkship with a bankruptcy judge in a major jurisdiction beginning in September. If I stopped working in April, is that too early or can I stop whenever? I have “unlimited vacation” at my firm. How much vacation/PTO is given at big law firms that don’t have unlimited?

I’ve been unsustainably swamped for months. Partner said they wanted to add an additional, more senior associate to the team on one massive case that went from “stayed” to “on fire” in the span of a month. I said that sounded awesome and the thought of someone else having to take on some responsibilities was such a relief… so why do I feel competitive and threatened now that the senior associate has actually been added? 🙄

Conventional wisdom on current firm counter-offering when mentioning you have a few offers? I have an offer at a large firm in Miami. Current large firm has no office there but mentioned they can likely let me be there in a remote basis. BCG and a few other law blog sites have advised against accepting current firm counter-offers, e.g., likely to leave, not loyal, off partner track, etc., but would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

What are your home office must-haves? I want to spruce up my office and have a stipend from my firm to help with office furniture and tech. I already have dual monitors, a decent webcam, and a ring light for video calls. Would love to hear others’ suggestions!

Is it a fail of character leaving biglaw? I want to leave, but despite the constant stress and suffering, I can’t avoid feeling like it’s my fault or that maybe I’m over exaggerating how I feel. What was the hardest class year for you? I used to think first year was by far the hardest but now I’m a third year and I’m really feeling the pressure to step up. I work in finance and at this point I’m expected to handle closing documents, manage first years, draft some portions of major docs, etc. I feel like I’m always frazzled, constantly second guessing if I handled something correctly and anxious to answer calls from clients/OC.
