In 2012 the awards took place in a huge venue in Soho. Big buzzy conference in the day full of leaders and founders from all the big agencies. Loud exciting awards show in the evening. Maybe 500 people there. R/GA won everything for the Nike Fuel Band. It felt big and important. By 2019 the event was like 75 people, a glass of warm wine and awards for small regional public service orgs. It felt like a mirror to the decline of the industry. How was this week's awards? Is the profession getting its swagger - and its funding - back?
4A’s Account Planning Awards / Conference (before name was changed to Jay Chiat Awards) in Miami around 2000 was bonkers!
IMHO, that was the hey day of the planning conference and awards in the U.S.
HUGE turnout. Great speakers and breakout sessions. Interesting wining case studies. A blowout party where they rented out an entire club for the group. Partied all night. Rinse and repeat. Our group stayed an extra day and went deep sea fishing. Then ate the fish at the hotel lobby’s sushi restaurant.
Those were the days!!! Haha. 🕺🏻🍻🚤🎣🍣🙌🏼
I think the awards are still notable (e.g. put it on your resumé if you won, your agency should post about it etc.) but creative awards will always carry more weight and get more attention.
Well the difference between the Effies and any other strat award is stark in terms of press, recognition, and conversation. The others probably arent worth the time or money to enter anymore - ROI in value for the agency just isn’t there.
You're right I didn't hear anything about them and hadn't thought much about it until I saw this post. Seems to me that they must have lost their sparkle a little bit if nobody is talking to them at all.
