Since recruiters aren’t too familiar with the work and may not understand the work the actual team does, I think that they can genuinely think you’re a perfect fit.
Not all recruiters understand what the hiring manager is looking for. It is frustrating for sure, but it's an annoying part of the process we have no option but to accept.
It’s worth calling out a few obvious points that usually come up when you deal with situations like this. Any potential mismatch in expectations can be identified early on — ideally during the very first stage of reviewing a role, whether you found it on a job board or received it directly from a recruiter.
If you’re unsure whether your experience truly aligns with the employer’s needs, culture, or priorities, you can hint at those questions in your cover letter. Then you can circle back to them during the phone interview — even more than once, if it helps. Ultimately, it’s in your best interest to understand the employer’s real priorities from the outset and compare them with your own expectations.
