Could you take the GASE Test to get certified in special education— schools are desperate for them!
I am a special education teacher and incorporate art in my lessons all the time! In NH we have alternate ways to start teaching a different subject, can you look into that? Good luck!!
I taught music, another field that is comparably limited in numbers compared to general elementary or secondary core subjects. And I drove a lot of miles my entire career because there were very few positions in my county. Teaching music served me well for 30 years until COVID when many schools in my area cut music (because we couldn’t have people in the same room singing and blowing cooties through instruments). I landed well and am now supervising virtual learning which my current district had continued to offer as a way to keep students (and their funding) in the district. So yes, branching out may be advantageous, as long as it fits you, your life, and your goals.
You are correct. The amount of art teachers per building vs. reg ed or sped is huge. Perhaps you get certified in another area. My district did not hire sped teachers who just took the state boards and passed. They had to take classes (all of them) for gen ed or sped to get the job. The up side was that if a teacher was trying to transition to another certification and currently a job was available, they would emergency certify that teacher while they finished the classes. Would your district entertain this idea. It could be worth it for you depending on how many years you have in education. My district would pay 80% of the bill as long as the teacher committed to teaching at their district for five years after they got the additional certification. If you already had 20 years in they wouldn’t do it. They didn’t think they would get their “monies worth” from that teacher. There’s always a hitch!
You can try another career add on. Try another field, such as science or social studies.
Look for remote/online teaching. There should be more.
I was encouraged to go Speech Pathology. Yes, so many times I wish I had done that. Definitely would have opened up my options for school vs. clinical.
Hey,
I agree with some of the comments before me. Maybe it is an opportunity for you to expand to other teaching areas so that you have something to fall back on. However, what I want to add an addition is creating your own thing (maybe virtually or locally) that is available to weather any storm, season, or life circumstances (including the drought of not being needed). Art brings color, joy, creativity, and expression. So I'm sure if you create your own outlet, and stick with that investment, that gift will make room for you.
